Choosing the Right Floor

Hard surfaces are more popular than ever, but it can be confusing to choose among hardwood, laminates, ceramic tile and vinyl.

For areas exposed to moisture, especially baths, mudrooms and kitchens, consider ceramic tile.  It is superior for its cleanability and its resistance to dents and abrasion, but is prone to crack if it is installed over a floor with any movement, so a new subfloor may be needed, especially in an older house.  It can be slipperier than other surfaces, unless you choose a style with some surface texture.

Hardwood flooring is popular for its natural beauty and because it can be sanded and refinished.  It is easy to clean and fairly stain resistant, but it is not recommended for use below ground level or in areas subject to moisture.   Hardwood laminates have a layer of solid hardwood over a three-ply construction that allows more resistance to expansion and contraction with moisture than a solid wood.   Because of this, they can be used below ground level.  Some can also be sanded and refinished.

Laminate flooring holds up very well to wear because it is made of the same hard surface as countertops.  Some popular brands are Formica, Armstrong Imagin and Wilsonart.  It is more scratch resistant and dent resistant than wood or vinyl flooring.  Most are not suited to areas of high moisture, although in many wood grain patterns as well as granite and stone looks.

Vinyl flooring has the widest variety of patterns and textures, and can often be laid in one sheet with no seams.  Many people prefer its high gloss appearance.  According to Consumer Reports, it is less slippery when wet than other surfaces.  Although it is durable, it can be punctured by sharp objects or torn by moving appliances.

Whatever type of hard surface flooring you choose, it is advisable to use floor protectors on furniture legs to prevent abrasion which can dull the finish and cause scratching.  Any spills should be wiped up immediately to prevent staining, and floors should be cleaned with the manufacturer's recommended cleaners to comply with the warranty.
